William de Warenne (1035-1088, Lewes, Sussex), Gundred de Chester
By birth ( and by marriage, contested because of consanguinity), kinsman of William the Conqueror and one of his most ardent supporters in the Battle of Hastings etc.
William De Warenne (1035-1088) cont.,
On a 2007 reckoning, judged the second most wealthy man in British History, with assets estimated as equivalent to 96 billion pounds (in 2007 terms). Much of this in an extraordinary number of estates, cited in the Domesday Book.
He and wife Gundred (Gondrada in Latin ) were so impressed on a visit to the famed Cluny Monastery in France that they founded the first Cluniac monastery in England – in Lewes, Sussex. ( one story has it that this was to fulfil a vow taken when they were in peril of their lives in a storm at sea). They were both buried in the Priory. The iniquitous Cromwell had the Priory looted and razed in 1537, so that the desecrated tombs were thus obliterated BUT (trumpets, please) excavations for the Lewes-Brighton railway across the old priory grounds in 1845 revealed two ‘leaden coffers’ bearing the names ‘ Will’me’ and ‘Gondrada’. Examination of the bones led to an estimation of William’s height as 6’ 1”.
Incidentally, heartened by the Mabo precedent, inter alia, I intend, at some point, to lodge a class action for compensation V Regina, HP, C of E ( inter alios) for the loss, in the Cromwellian purge, of various abbeys, friaries, priories, monasteries, conventual establishments (incl. Covent Garden) etc. and their appurtenances. Subscribe NOW !
Beware ! The following assertion MAY be inaccurate, as still being hotly contested by historians, but supplied here to whet YOUR appetite for further research. Note too the clerical queasiness re consanguinity referred to above. Anyway, herewith presented as if valid :
That direct link you have all been waiting for ( and so, so close in our (earlier) Hamilton heritage) : the aforesaid Gundred may have been – bated breath required – haemoglobinally speaking, regal : her daddy – and so, our ancestor ,if true, was … William the Conqueror ! Mind you, the DNA trace would be fairly minute as W the C would rank as but one of my 26 times Great Grandfathers, numbering a little short of 133, 392, 128 persons. Yes … 133 million ! (Heaven forbid that I should wish to descend to the level of a – shudder ! – mere mathematician, but I have condescended – note subtle pun – to do a tad multiplication … must confess, almost enjoyed it ! ) ‘A little short’ ? this is allowing for a few instances where marriage partners, being cousins, have some ancestors in common e.g. in recent times, James Fulton’s Tasmanian daughters, Kate and Lily, married first cousins Thomas and Graeme ( sons of James’s brother Graeme).
Rudolph de Varenne ( ), Emma de Varenne (name derived from Varenne River, to the south of Dieppe, northern Normandy)
Bishop Hugh de Thouars ( – 1020, Thouars), Beatrice de Crepon
Now , herein lies the rub : things get rather murky … Dear reader, I crave your forgiveness, should you remonstrate with me re the beguiling suggestion in my opening paragraph, my inference that I could lead you to Bjorn ‘Ironside’ Ragnarsson : such may be the case, but frankly I doubt it … I shall reproduce for you, dear reader, the suppositions to be found on the website ‘Ancestors of a 21st Century British family’ – alleged ‘facts’ that are at variance with views held by several contemporary historians. You may well accuse me of deceit, lies, misrepresentation, interweaving of myth and legend with authentic history, but I assuage any concept of personal guilt in my anticipation that YOU will be motivated to your own research … And so :
Severic de Thouars, Gunnhild Olafsdottir(923- ) Gunnhild (aka Gyrid) appears as Queen consort of King Harald Bluetooth (d.970). Perhaps she married Severic in a second marriage ?
Olaf Bjornsson, Ingeborg Thransdottir King of Sweden – short reign : 970-975
Bjorn (The Old) Eriksson ( – 970), Thrando of Sula King of Sweden
Erik Edmundsson, (882-932) King of Sweden
Edmund Eriksson (832-873) King of Sweden
Erik Refilsson ‘Sea-King’ – his brother being King of Sweden
Refil Bjornsson
Bjorn ( ‘Ironside’) Ragnarsson King of Sweden, the first of the house of Munso.
As we are all gentle souls, perhaps it is as well that we can forego the notion of descent from such a rapacious villain as said Ironside …
While I have not supplied references to indicate provenance, I am happy about the validity of all generations as far back as, and including, Wiliam de Warenne (1035-1088). Before that … Qui sait ?
